About Us

There is abundant evidence that to break the cycle of poverty, we need to intervene earlier: during pregnancy and the early years of childhood.

Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital medical providers and staff are well aware that social and economic conditions strongly impact health and affect the delivery of healthcare. As a result, ZSFG is home to many innovative programs that serve vulnerable pregnant women, families and young children, especially those at highest risk due to mental health issues, medical co-morbidities or childhood developmental problems. As is typical in large medical facilities, at ZSFG important social medicine interventions and training opportunities are typically housed in their own departments, and too rarely disseminated or scaled systematically across the hospital’s population.

The Solid Start Initiative brings together an inter-disciplinary network of programs along with the voices and perspectives of patients and community members to share best practices, improve data collection and evaluation, attract funding and promote model dissemination to strengthen, sustain, study, scale, and showcase this work within ZSFG, the broader San Francisco safety net, and regional and national communities.
